Bis-ang

A Taste of Tradition and Ingenuity

Bis-ang is a traditional fish preservation method practiced by locals in the municipality and it can be done with almost any kind of fish! The term “Bis” comes from the Latin word meaning twice, which explains why fish used in bis-ang are sliced in half, but not fully separated.

This technique helps preserve fish so it can be stored and enjoyed for longer periods. Some of the most popular bis-ang products include danggit (made from Balawis fish) and bis-ang na bulad (using various types of fish). Once prepared, the finished product is called binis-ang—a local favorite, especially loved by balikbayans!

Many locals make and sell binis-ang not only as a livelihood but also as a way to keep the tradition alive. Fish used for bis-ang are either bought from the market or caught by the practitioners themselves, often from nearby barangays, known for being home to skilled danggit makers.

A perfect blend of flavor, culture, and community. Bis-ang truly brings out the best in local heritage.
